How to Move Large Furniture Easily by Yourself?

  • Get the equipment and packing supplies that you need. Without them you will be helpless – large and heavy furniture needs to be handled by more people and the right tools to assist you. That means furniture dolly and straps to keep the furniture on the dolly stable. You can also use sliders – they are convenient because with them you would be able to move your furniture around the room much more easily. You will also need to have packing tape and packing paper for wrapping up the items you take out of your furniture.
  • As you are supplying yourself with the materials that you will need for the move, take the time to empty your furniture. Whether that is the wardrobe, drawers, cabinets, etc. it will be lighter for you to move heavy furniture by yourself if the furniture is empty. Besides, if there is something rattling inside it, that could break or even worse – cause the furniture to shift around and eventually fall over. And there is no need for anybody to get hurt to get this tough job done.
    Bare floor
Protect the legs of your furniture with towels if you have a bare floor and slide it to move.
  • Apply the right moving technique. Don’t lift up heavy items. How to move heavy furniture alone? Instead, slide them around. It will save you effort and energy. Pushing yourself to lift heavy items is a risk for your health, home, and for the item itself, especially if you don’t know what technique to use for that. Spare yourself the potential trouble. Still, if you have to lift something, try to keep the weight on your legs, arms and shoulders, and spare your back. Try to keep it straight as much as possible.
  • Use sliders for your furniture instead of lifting it by hand. You can also wrap the legs of your furniture and slide it, instead of lift it. If you have a carpet floor, you can use smooth cardboard. If you have bare floors, you can use towels. Slip them underneath the legs of your furniture – don’t lift it; just tilt it gently on its side and slide the right material underneath.
  • Having in mind the weight of each piece of your furniture, try to find some friends/ colleagues/ relatives/ etc. over to help. Make sure that you have at least 1 person for each 100 pounds of weight of the item and 1 person extra to help you in case someone tilts the furniture, it starts slipping from his hands, etc. That is, if your heaviest piece of furniture weights 300 pounds, get 4 people to help you.
  • Get the equipment for the moving men. If you have invited your friends over, ensure that they have rugged leather work gloves and wear belts on their wastes to protect themselves during the move. The gloves are good to protect the hands from sharp edges and when the item moved could get slippery. The belts will support the backs of the men.

    Moving checklist - delivery day

    Working with the mover:

    • Be on hand to accept delivery. If you cannot be there personally, be sure you authorize an adult to be your representative to accept delivery and pay the charges for you.
    • On the day of delivery, the van operator will attempt to contact you by phone and/or will make an appearance at residence if he is unable to reach you. If you are unable to accept delivery of your shipment within the free waiting time (i.e., two hours) after notification of arrival at destination, you may request waiting time until delivery can be made.
    • Check your household goods as they are unloaded. If there is a change in the condition of the property from that noted on the inventory at the time of loading or if any items are missing, note discrepancies on the van operator's copy of the inventory sheet. By signing the inventory sheet, you are acknowledging receipt of all items listed. Personally report any loss or damage to your salesperson or move coordinator.
    • When unloading, each piece of furniture will be placed as you direct, including the laying of rugs and setting up any beds disassembled at origin. However, mattresses will not be unpacked, and appliances and/or fixtures will NOT be installed. At your request and at an additional charge, your salesperson or move coordinator can arrange for this service. The mover is not obligated to rearrange your furniture.
    • Place a floor plan of your new home by the entrance, which the movers can use to determine where each piece of furniture should go.
    • Keep all documents pertaining to your move in a safe place. You will need them for verification of moving expenses when you file your federal income tax returns.
    • To prevent possible damage, television sets, other electronic equipment and major appliances should not be used for 24 hours after delivery, allowing them time to adjust to room temperature.

5 Things You Should Do One Week Before You Move

1)Defrost Refrigerator, Strip Beds, Unplug Appliances-

One of the last things you'll use the night before your move is your bed. So, stripping the beds and packing up the sheets and comforter is one task that will definitely be left to the last day. You'll also need to prepare your home for the fact that it isn't going to be used until a new owner arrives. That means you need to defrost the refrigerator and unplug any appliances. Defrost the refrigerator 24 to 48 hours before you leave. If it has anicemaker, make sure to empty the ice bin and then you may need to shut off the water line to the refrigerator. Any other appliances should also be unplugged.

2)Prepare a Survival Kit In Case the Moving Truck Arrives Late-

The words "survival kit" may sound a little extreme for a moving scenario. After all, unless you're moving to a remote place in the desert, it's unlikely that you and your family will have to go without food and water if you beat the moving truck to your new residence. Nevertheless, there are some things you'll want to have on your person or in your car in case the moving truck is late. For example, pack any important medications, paperwork, changes of clothes that you'll need, and any special foods you know you'll want (even if it's just your coffee maker and some coffee beans). You should also include a first-aid kit. And it wouldn't hurt to pack some tools for work you can do around your new abode before the moving truck arrives.

3)Tag Furniture for Proper Placement in the New Home-

It's one thing for movers to pick up your million-pound armoire and carry it into the house. But it's a much better thing if they pick up your million-pound armoire and carry it to the correct room. That way, you don't have to do much lifting after the movers are gone. So, make some decisions about where each piece of furniture should live and tag each piece with the name of the room. You might even want to make a floor planof the new house for the movers, so they'll have an idea of what goes where before they get to the house. That way, when the movers enter your home, they know exactly where to go and where to put the heavy stuff

    Transfer Prescriptions-

If you're moving to a new area and you use prescription medication, then you need to set up that prescription at a drug store in your new locale. This will involve calling your doctors to have them send all of your prescriptions to a new place, so it's a good idea to get this one out of the way early in the week, rather than later. But it's a very important item on your to-do list. You definitely don't want to have to bother with calling your doctor and setting up those prescriptions when you've arrived at your new town and you're desperate for your medication.

    Transfer or Close Bank Accounts-

If you bank with a regional bank and you're moving to a new locale, then you'll need to set up an account with a new bank. And that's especially true if you're moving to a new country. It's best to set up a new bank account before you close out the account with your old bank. If you set up a new bank account before you arrive in your new town, you won't pay fees to use ATM machines that belong to companies you don't bank with - so you'll save money. Before you move, check the area to see which bank's ATMs will be most convenient for you. That should help you choose the right one.

Pianos and Pool Tables Oh My...!

Whether you are moving from San Jose to San Jose, or from Palo Alto to Los Angeles, if you have an upright piano, baby grand piano, grand piano, or pool table, this is information you need to know about moving those items!

A lot of customers purchase pianos and pool tables from others on Craigslist and EBay, but they don't consider how they will get the piano or pool table to their new home. Sometimes the cost of moving the piano or pool table will exceed the cost of the piano or pool table, so buyer beware!

First of all, not all movers are professional Piano or Pool Table movers, so be sure you ask if they have experience with this! All Pro Movers Inc. is very well versed in moving these items.

Movers that can also do Piano and Pool Table moves, can do them alone, or as part of a larger move.

Moving a piano can cost anywhere from $125 to $500 and up depending on the size of the piano.

If you live in a tricky parking place like San Francisco, there are also fees for long carries, as well as if the piano needs to be transported up or down any stairs or elevators, in some cases and fee for a piano crane is needed in order to get it to the level of your home or apartment/condo you need.

Smaller upright pianos can be moved in one piece, baby grands and grand pianos will have some disassemble  and reassembly.

All pianos will be wrapped with quilted blankets, shrink wrap and tape to protect them during the move. Professional movers will use dollies, blankets, shrink wrap and tape, and either professional lift gates, or ramps to move your piano.

Most pianos will need returning  after being transported.

Make sure that the company you hire is a professional piano moving company that has the proper insurance to cover the piano should anything happen to it.

Pool tables are very similar to pianos, pool tables can take an hour or two to dismantle properly, and another hour or so to reassemble at your new home. They often cost about $200 to $600 to move, plus fees for long carries, and stairs just like a piano.

All Pro  Movers Inc. has a lot of experience moving both pianos and pool tables throughout the San Francisco Bay Area, and beyond.

So before you purchase one of these beauties, be prepared for the cost to move them!

What To Pack Inside of the Four Sizes of Industry Standard Moving Boxes:

There are three industry standard sizes of moving boxes that are included with every moving kit. The first type of moving boxes are often referred to as small moving boxes, otherwise known as  ”All Purpose moving boxes” or the 1.5 cubic. All Purpose moving boxes are the most important box for moving, and it is suggested to pack anything inside of this moving box that can fit inside. It is deep and wide, yet it is not too large that you can risk over-packing.The medium sized moving boxes, otherwise known as “Kitchen moving boxes” or 3.0 cubic, is ideal to pack large kitchen pots, pans, and small appliances. The large moving boxes, otherwise known as “Pillow moving boxes” or 4.5 cubic, are helpful only to pack very lightweight items such as pillows. The biggest mistake that people make when packing is to use large moving boxes to pack most of their home. The risk of damage, having packing boxes that are too heavy to carry, and boxes that break goes up drastically. The last type of industry standard moving boxes are wardrobe boxes. Wardrobe moving boxes include a bar inside of them that enable you to hang your clothes inside of them while moving or storing, and they make for wonderful garage storage after you use them.
