Rich People Are Leaving California, According To Polls:

The latest study of wealthy Gen-Xers (those born between the early to mid 60s to the early 80s, and with an income of at least $100,000) shows that Florida is their new favorite moving destination, while New York is their least.
While Florida is the most popular moving destination of wealthy middle-aged people, six of the top 10 states are in the South. About 9,000 moved to Florida between 2015 and 2016, though. About an equal number of that same demographic left New York during that time.
The top states are:
  • Florida
  • Texas
  • North Carolina
  • Washington
  • South Carolina
  • Colorado
  • Oregon
  • Tennessee
  • Georgia
  • Arizona
It’s not just New York. The Northeast in general isn’t favored by Gen-Xers. They are also fleeing New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania.
Illinois, California, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Maryland, and Washington, D.C., are the least popular destinations.
It’s not just wealthy Gen-Xers who are moving to Florida. In 2018, Florida grew by more than 320,000 people, mostly from people moving in. Only Texas has had a larger influx of residents. Experts expect that Florida will have 22 million residents by 2022.
What does that mean for Floridians? Well, it means more cars will be on the road, and the state will have to address that fact. The good news is, though, that more wealthy people means more tax revenue, so in theory, there should be money to improve the roads and public transportation.
The influx of people will drive real estate costs up, which is great news if you already own, but not so good news if you are relocating there. One of the reasons Florida is such a popular moving destination is the cost of real estate. The median home asking price is $299,000, and is expected to rise. Many of the states people are moving from have much higher real estate prices. The median home value in California is $548,000.
If you are moving from California to Florida, let us know. We’ll be happy to help you settle in.

7 Lessons After The First Year Living Out My California Dream

When I was 15, I was obsessed with the idea of California. After a family vacation to San Diego County, the intensity of my interest only heightened.
The endless number of pop-punk songs about my favorite state on my first-generation iPod fueled my obsession, as well as aerial “money shots” of Newport Beach I saw while bingeing on episodes of "The OC." Bottom line: I was California dreaming.
I held on to the hope that one day, a West Coast sunset would be mine. A decade later, I got my wish.
It was a giant leap of faith that led me to LAX with an open-ended ticket. I had two bags and a heart filled with ambition. I was just two months shy of my 25th birthday and I couldn’t wait to celebrate my quarter-century in my favorite state.
One year after that defining moment, my departing flights are no longer out of Los Angeles, but San Francisco.
In my year as a Californian, I’ve managed to live in both Southern and Northern California. I never considered my move to be switching teams or changing sides; it was just an opportunity to continue exploring and adventuring.
While a year might not seem like a long time, I’ve learned and grown over the past 12 months. My eyes, heart and mind have opened to another way of life. I can genuinely say I see the world differently and have been changed forever.
While SoCal and NorCal have both come with separate lessons, there has certainly been a lot of overlap in the wisdom the Golden State has offered me.

MONEY, MONEY, MONEY…

The fastest lesson I learned in California was it’s very expensive to live here. The high cost of living is a quick deterrent for most who’d otherwise consider relocation, but in many ways, you get what you pay for.
California has the best weather in the world — particularly SoCal. It’s rare to truly need either air conditioning or heating, with cool nights and warm, sunny days along the Southern coastline.
Even in Northern California, heating is rarely completely necessary; although, the nights get chilly and sometimes warrant a space heater. However, be prepared to spend about half of your salary on rent if you choose San Francisco.

GET 'YER GRUB ON

Food might be expensive and add to the astronomical cost of living, but California has some of the best cuisine in the country.
For any craving you might have, there is likely a world-class restaurant near your metropolitan area. I’d never had Burmese food until I moved to California, but found a world-renowned spot for it within walking distance of my SF apartment.
You can also get an authentic bowl of ramen at a neighborhood joint for less than $10.
Also worth noting is that for every dietary restriction you may have, there’s a place that caters to your needs. Gluten-free? Check. Vegetarian? I’ll one-up you with a list of local vegan restaurants.
Carnivorous and craving a bison burger on a whole-wheat bun, avocado and a kombucha to wash it down? We gotchu.
Just don’t get sticker shock when you’re handed the check. Only in the Golden State…

THE STRUGGLE OF PACIFIC TIME

I never realized just how much of a difference three hours makes until I moved out west. It’s so much tougher to connect with friends working nine-to-five jobs and older relatives rarely are awake at convenient times to call after work.
Truthfully, there’s nothing more aggravating than getting a 6 am call from a solicitor who assumes from your area code that you’re on Eastern Time. As if you needed another reason to hate those calls...
Also, it can be incredibly difficult to watch sports on the West Coast. The early games start REALLY early, and if your favorite team isn’t local, it’s surprisingly challenging to find a bar with the game on.
Sports matter a lot less here, and while it’s not impossible to catch the game of your choice, be prepared for a challenge.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

It’s now funny to me that everyone loves to brag about the proximity of things on the East Coast.
While it’s true that being able to hop on a train from New York to Philadelphia or DC is a wonderful option for a change of scenery, let’s not forget about all of the incredible sights on the left coast.
Vegas, the Grand Canyon, Mexico, Zion… All of these places are an easy trip from California. When I left Los Angeles, I left friends and a city I was just beginning to get to know and love.
Traveling to LA from SF is a super quick plane ride and not very expensive at all. If I want, I can get out to LA as frequently as once or twice per month.
The convenience of the West Coast also means I can take a weekend getaway to Scottsdale without having to miss a day of work, which is a phenomenal perk (and one I’ve widely exercised.)
Sometimes, I think I never knew true natural beauty until I moved to California. Naturally, I’m not talking about Hollywood beauty (so many puns, you guys!).
The California coastline is one of the most gorgeous in the world, with sights like Big Sur, Point Lobos and Malibu hardly resembling anything else on earth. And, there ain’t nothin’ like watching a sunset over the Pacific Ocean.

HERE TODAY, GONE TOMORROW

Trends are a way of life here. No matter how attractive or god-awful they may be, in America, the trends start in California.
Whether it’s a tech trend in coding or engineering, or clothing or hairstyles in Hollywood, you’ll always see it here first.

STEREOTYPES

The archetypical tech employee or engineer wears flannel, beanies, wayfarers and vans or converse.
A Hollywood hipster can be found decked out in American Apparel and discussing the “raw, realness” of vinyl. While these are not true across the board, they possess wide validity.
The image of a Hollywood hopeful batting false lashes and twirling hair extensions is hard NOT to find in the Los Angeles nightlife. However, these cliché visions can be misleading.
Two of the most wonderful females I had the pleasure of meeting in LA were in entertainment, and personality-wise, they provided a stark contrast to the “fakeness” often associated with Hollywood.
In San Francisco, I’ve met plenty of tech employees and engineers who look totally “normal,” or even fashionable compared to the SF start-up stereotype.
If you can look past appearances, all the hidden gems in California will surprise you.
More often than not, you meet people who feel so grateful to be doing what they love in the best place in the world to do it, and that kind of passion and drive is contagious.

FRANKIE SAY RELAX

While San Francisco is the most East Coast-esque of the cities in California, I learned a valuable lesson even in fast-paced LA that translates into a mantra every time I step outside the city limits of San Francisco: Breathe.
California is so beautiful it’s ridiculous. If you don’t stop and look up or around you, you’ll surely miss some incredible and awe-inspiring scenery.
Get in your car or hop on a train. Listen to an album that moves you to the depths of your soul. Feel free and enjoy the ride.
Take a deep breath. Be glad just to be.
For a while, I was afraid of truly taking in all of California’s majesty. As a self-proclaimed wanderer, I didn’t want to fear leaving on my next adventure when the timing is right.
I have no idea what’s in store for the future, but I’m happy to be here now. Whatever may come, I’ll ride the waves and roll with the punches.
I got my California dream. All I have to do is breathe.

Your Checklist for Moving to Another State

Preparing to move to another state? From packing your belongings to finding a cost-effective way to move, relocating to a new state is no easy task. Fortunately, we’re here to help. To ensure a smooth move to your new home, follow these 13 tips to help guide you on how to move to another state.

Checklist for Moving to Another State

  1. Visit your new state and city

Before moving to another state, I highly recommend making at least one trip to your new city. This way, you can get a good feel for the location and various neighborhoods. Bring a guide book with you or head to the town’s visitors center for brochures, maps and recommendations. If staying in a hotel, ask the concierge for suggestions. You should also be able to find plenty of information on your new city and state through internet research and review sites. In addition to the city’s tourism attractions, I recommend seeking out local hot spots and under-the-radar hangouts.
  2. Research schools

Have school-age children? Make researching schools in your new city or state a high priority. If you plan to send your child to public school, determine which neighborhoods are associated with your schools of interest. To find top-rated schools in your new neighborhood, use Moving.com’s School Ratings tool, which includes GreatSchools ratings and other helpful information.
  3. Budget accordingly

Moving to another state won’t be cheap. In fact, according to the American Moving and Storage Association, the average cost of hiring professional movers for an out of state move is $4,300. Keep in mind that even if you’re planning a DIY move, you’ll have to pay for a truck rental or container, moving supplies and various other expenses. To figure out your budget, start with how much you are willing and able to spend on the move. Then list out all necessary moving expenses. Remember to put a bit of extra money aside for unexpected expenses. Also, if moving for a job, be sure to check whether or not your employer plans to cover part or all of your moving expenses.
  4. Find a place to live

Ideally, you’d like to find a new place to live before you move. Unless you know the area well already, I recommend renting for the first six months while you get a feel for the city. To find a safe, budget-friendly place to live, hire a reputable Realtor to show you homes in your choice neighborhoods. Hiring the right Realtor is extremely important when moving to another state. A knowledgeable real estate agent should be able to help guide you in your house hunting process. They should also know the market inside and out, and be able to help you with all legalities and paperwork. To find a real estate agent in your new state, check Realtor.com’s network of Realtors.
  5. Research moving companies

If you do decide to hire a moving company to help with the move, make sure it’s a reliable and trustworthy one. When researching moving companies, check out company reviews and ratings on Moving.com’s Moving Company Directory. This directory includes customer reviews, the moving company’s U.S. DOT number, Better Business Bureau rating, any official complaints filed with the FMCSA, and whether the moving company has any association with the American Moving & Storage Association. I recommend contacting at least three to four moving companies to obtain a quote. Note: movers should perform either an in-person inspection or a video survey of your belongings before giving you a quote. If the mover gives you a quote over the internet without looking at your belongings or gives you a quote that seems too good to be true, sound the alarm. These are two major red flags that shouldn’t be ignored.
To find the right moving company to handle your next move, check Moving.com’s extensive network of reputable and reliable movers. All relocation companies in our network are licensed and insured, so you can rest assured that your move will be in good hands.
  6. Consider cheaper alternatives to hiring a moving company

Bad news: hiring a moving company for an interstate move is expensive. Good news: there are, however, cheaper alternatives to hiring professional movers. For one, you can rent a portable moving container. These moving containers also double as temporary storage containers when moving. Renting a portable moving container for an out of state move may cost anywhere from $2,000 to $3,000 per month, however, the cost depends on the rental duration and size of the container.
A second alternative is to rent a moving truck and drive your belongings to the new state yourself. Not only are truck rentals a big money saver when it comes to moving, but they’re also easy to come by. Several truck rental options to choose from include U-Haul, Budget, Enterprise and Penske. Finally, if moving a household of belongings a long distance, consider using a large freight moving trailer instead of a moving company. Several popular freight trailer companies include U-Pack, Estes SureMove and Old Dominion Household Services.
  7. Come up with a strategic packing plan

Before boxing up your things, come up with a timeline and plan for packing. I recommend packing all non-essentials first. Non-essentials are anything you won’t need in the weeks leading up to the move, including books, home decor items, and electronics. Pack essentials last. These should include kitchen items, dinnerware and toiletries. To make your packing easier, donate items you won’t need in the new home to a local Salvation ArmyHabitat for Humanity or Goodwill. Be sure to pack all important documents and records in a separate clearly-labeled box.
  8. Schedule and transfer your utilities

Before you move, be sure to contact your utility companies to let them know you are moving. Utilities include cable and internet, water and sewer, gas, electricity, satellite, and security system. If you already have an address in your new state, go ahead and schedule a transfer or installation date.
  9. Forward your mail

Fortunately, forwarding your snail mail is easy and can be done well ahead of time. All you have to do is go to USPS.com and choose the date you wish to begin forwarding your mail. Thinking of renting a PO Box in your new city? Check out Moving.com’s guide to setting up a PO Box when you move.
  10. Let others know you are moving

Don’t forget to let your friends, family, neighbors and coworkers know you’re moving! Chances are good that you won’t have time to sit down with everyone in-person to tell them about the move. Instead, try sending a simple email with your new mailing address and any other additional details about the move you wish to share.
  11. Establish domicile in the new state

Once you move, you’ll need to establish legal domicile for tax purposes. If you’re moving to another state permanently and making it your main place of residence, you’ll need to establish legal domicile for tax purposes. To find information on the various ways to establish domicile in your new state, check out the state’s website.
  12. Get a new driver’s license

Want to drive in your new state? You’ll need a new driver’s license from your state’s DMV. Be sure to check your state’s requirements, as many states require new residents to obtain their driver’s license within a specific time window after moving. Keep in mind that while requirements for transferring a driver’s license vary from state to state, you’ll most likely need a driver’s license, proof of residency, proof of your social security number and an additional form of identification.
  13. Purchase a pet license

Got a pet? You may need to register your furball with your city or county. While requirements and deadlines vary depending on the state, many places require owners to register their pets within a month of acquiring the pet or moving. This is mainly to ensure that animals receive their necessary Rabies shots for public safety purposes.

How to Choose a Reliable Moving Company

Finding a reputable moving company requires doing some research, but the payoff can be worthwhile.
That’s what Scheyda Mohammadian, a model and public relations professional from Las Vegas learned the hard way. Last fall, after searching on the web for a company to move her belongings from Las Vegas to her new home in Texas, she decided to go with the one that offered her the lowest price—$1,700.
After wiring a 50 percent deposit to the company and paying $450 on moving day, she discovered that her possessions had been moved only to a storage unit a few miles from her Nevada home. Then she had to pay another $450 to the company to release her belongings.
Mohammadian decided to rent a truck and hire workers to get her things to Texas. But the cost came to more than $4,000.
Such experiences aren’t all that unusual. Some moving companies quote lowball prices and then, once the move is underway, hold their customers' property hostage until they pay much more. Others demand substantial deposits and then don't show up, says Katherine Hutt, a spokeswoman for the Better Business Bureau.
To make sure you hire a reliable mover, consider taking these steps.
Hire a local mover. If you hire a moving company based in your area, you'll avoid being tricked into doing business with an unscrupulous mover operating solely over the internet, says Scott Michael, president and CEO of the American Moving & Storage Association, a trade group that represents companies that handle local, interstate, and international moves. Consider visiting the company's office and checking out its equipment, he says.
Get estimates. Get at least three written in-home estimates, Hutt advises. Be suspicious if an estimate is unusually low or if the moving company provides an estimate over the phone or online without sending a representative to scope out the job. It may be a sign of scam.
Verify credentials. For moves between states, a mover must have a number issued by the Department of Transportation. It serves as a license that identifies commercial vehicles transporting passengers or hauling cargo in interstate commerce. If the mover you're considering is licensed, it must provide the DOT number on its website and in its advertising, says Kurt Larson, a spokesman for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, a division of the Department of Transportation that oversees truck and bus safety. The mover also must have a carrier number from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
You can check the DOT and motor carrier numbers, one way to ensure that the company is legitimate.
For in-state moves, the requirements vary by jurisdiction. In some states, intrastate movers are unregulated, Michael says. Thirty-three states require in-state movers to have a federal DOT number. Check your state for more information.
Also consider using a moving company that's certified by the American Moving & Storage Association's ProMover program. It subjects movers to a background check and requires them to adhere to the association's standards.
Read reviews and complaints. See what other customers are saying about the company by searching the web with the company name and such terms as "complaints" and "reviews." Find out whether the company has a report with the Better Business Bureau, which has reviews of more than 20,000 moving-related companies. Look at the letter grade the BBB has assigned the mover and read about any complaints, reviews, and government actions.
You can also review the company's complaint history by using the mover search tool on the Department of Transportation’s website.
Be wary of large deposit requirements. A moving company shouldn't require a deposit of more than 20 percent of the estimated cost of the move, Michael says. Many won't require any payment until your belongings are delivered, he explains. Put any deposits or other payments on a credit card, so you can contest the charge if there's wrongdoing.
If a mover holds your possessions hostage in an effort to force you to pay more, try contacting the police, who may be willing to help, Michael says.
If you have a problem with a mover, file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and, for an interstate move, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
If the mover is a member of the American Moving & Storage Association, file a complaint with that organization as well.

Also complain to your state or local consumer protection agency. In November, after a company was accused of overcharging customers and holding their possessions hostage, the Maryland attorney general ordered it to pay fines and costs of more than half a million dollars—including at least $117,000 in consumer restitution.

Planning for an Office Relocation? Expert office movers & packers are here to help

Planning to move into a new office? Congratulations! This shows that your company has been prospering and you are marking off this new phase with a relocation.

Well, to begin with, it’s an excellent decision. A new place, a new ambience will bring in that added enthusiasm among the employees, which will hold in good stead for the company. But have you thought about the relocations part yet? You need to assign this important responsibility to trusted and responsible Corporate Relocation Services so that the office moves are hassle-free. After all, this shift marks a new beginning, which plays a pivotal role in your company’s progress.
A meticulous plan for quite a substantial period of time is all you need before you venture to relocate. If the prior planning is good enough, then the transition span will be short, and work can be resumed within a brief hiatus.
But it’s not easy to achieve this. Relocating an office space is a greater task to handle than the domestic one. It’s usually on a much larger scale and handling a wide variety of things and human resources at times can get cumbersome. Well, to keep this situation under control all you have to do is make an office move checklist that will make sure you’re organised enough not to miss even the smallest of objects during relocation:
·         Make a list of all possible things that to be shifted
·         Jot down every small detail possible of those things that are being relocated
·         Consult experts like us, who have 60+ years of experience, when it comes to executive moving and storage

Now that these things are sorted, it’s time to plan for your office relocation and bring the office transition on the right track.

1.       Set a timeframe for relocation:

It’s necessary to determine a timeframe and inform everyone involved with the process so that the tasks can be carried out without any hassles whatsoever. This will ensure that the business is not hampered even when the relocation process is on.

2.       Finalising on a proper office location:

If you want to ensure that the relocation process is worth it, look for a worthy location and office space that will meet all your requirements and be suitable for you in possible respects.

3.       Determine a budget prior to the relocation:

If your relocation plan is full-proof, then determining a budget for the office move will also be quite realistic. This is very important since it will have an impact on the business.

4.       Assign tasks to the employees:

Way before the relocation happens, make sure that you designate tasks to the entire team about each person’s responsibilities. It’s advisable to introduce relocation company executives to each individual department and organised weekly meetings in order to analyse the progress and problems concerned with the office moves.
So, office moves will no longer pose a looming threat if you have with you, the assistance of an expert relocation company like us.
