Your Checklist for Moving to Another State

Preparing to move to another state? From packing your belongings to finding a cost-effective way to move, relocating to a new state is no easy task. Fortunately, we’re here to help. To ensure a smooth move to your new home, follow these 13 tips to help guide you on how to move to another state.

Checklist for Moving to Another State

  1. Visit your new state and city

Before moving to another state, I highly recommend making at least one trip to your new city. This way, you can get a good feel for the location and various neighborhoods. Bring a guide book with you or head to the town’s visitors center for brochures, maps and recommendations. If staying in a hotel, ask the concierge for suggestions. You should also be able to find plenty of information on your new city and state through internet research and review sites. In addition to the city’s tourism attractions, I recommend seeking out local hot spots and under-the-radar hangouts.
  2. Research schools

Have school-age children? Make researching schools in your new city or state a high priority. If you plan to send your child to public school, determine which neighborhoods are associated with your schools of interest. To find top-rated schools in your new neighborhood, use Moving.com’s School Ratings tool, which includes GreatSchools ratings and other helpful information.
  3. Budget accordingly

Moving to another state won’t be cheap. In fact, according to the American Moving and Storage Association, the average cost of hiring professional movers for an out of state move is $4,300. Keep in mind that even if you’re planning a DIY move, you’ll have to pay for a truck rental or container, moving supplies and various other expenses. To figure out your budget, start with how much you are willing and able to spend on the move. Then list out all necessary moving expenses. Remember to put a bit of extra money aside for unexpected expenses. Also, if moving for a job, be sure to check whether or not your employer plans to cover part or all of your moving expenses.
  4. Find a place to live

Ideally, you’d like to find a new place to live before you move. Unless you know the area well already, I recommend renting for the first six months while you get a feel for the city. To find a safe, budget-friendly place to live, hire a reputable Realtor to show you homes in your choice neighborhoods. Hiring the right Realtor is extremely important when moving to another state. A knowledgeable real estate agent should be able to help guide you in your house hunting process. They should also know the market inside and out, and be able to help you with all legalities and paperwork. To find a real estate agent in your new state, check Realtor.com’s network of Realtors.
  5. Research moving companies

If you do decide to hire a moving company to help with the move, make sure it’s a reliable and trustworthy one. When researching moving companies, check out company reviews and ratings on Moving.com’s Moving Company Directory. This directory includes customer reviews, the moving company’s U.S. DOT number, Better Business Bureau rating, any official complaints filed with the FMCSA, and whether the moving company has any association with the American Moving & Storage Association. I recommend contacting at least three to four moving companies to obtain a quote. Note: movers should perform either an in-person inspection or a video survey of your belongings before giving you a quote. If the mover gives you a quote over the internet without looking at your belongings or gives you a quote that seems too good to be true, sound the alarm. These are two major red flags that shouldn’t be ignored.
To find the right moving company to handle your next move, check Moving.com’s extensive network of reputable and reliable movers. All relocation companies in our network are licensed and insured, so you can rest assured that your move will be in good hands.
  6. Consider cheaper alternatives to hiring a moving company

Bad news: hiring a moving company for an interstate move is expensive. Good news: there are, however, cheaper alternatives to hiring professional movers. For one, you can rent a portable moving container. These moving containers also double as temporary storage containers when moving. Renting a portable moving container for an out of state move may cost anywhere from $2,000 to $3,000 per month, however, the cost depends on the rental duration and size of the container.
A second alternative is to rent a moving truck and drive your belongings to the new state yourself. Not only are truck rentals a big money saver when it comes to moving, but they’re also easy to come by. Several truck rental options to choose from include U-Haul, Budget, Enterprise and Penske. Finally, if moving a household of belongings a long distance, consider using a large freight moving trailer instead of a moving company. Several popular freight trailer companies include U-Pack, Estes SureMove and Old Dominion Household Services.
  7. Come up with a strategic packing plan

Before boxing up your things, come up with a timeline and plan for packing. I recommend packing all non-essentials first. Non-essentials are anything you won’t need in the weeks leading up to the move, including books, home decor items, and electronics. Pack essentials last. These should include kitchen items, dinnerware and toiletries. To make your packing easier, donate items you won’t need in the new home to a local Salvation ArmyHabitat for Humanity or Goodwill. Be sure to pack all important documents and records in a separate clearly-labeled box.
  8. Schedule and transfer your utilities

Before you move, be sure to contact your utility companies to let them know you are moving. Utilities include cable and internet, water and sewer, gas, electricity, satellite, and security system. If you already have an address in your new state, go ahead and schedule a transfer or installation date.
  9. Forward your mail

Fortunately, forwarding your snail mail is easy and can be done well ahead of time. All you have to do is go to USPS.com and choose the date you wish to begin forwarding your mail. Thinking of renting a PO Box in your new city? Check out Moving.com’s guide to setting up a PO Box when you move.
  10. Let others know you are moving

Don’t forget to let your friends, family, neighbors and coworkers know you’re moving! Chances are good that you won’t have time to sit down with everyone in-person to tell them about the move. Instead, try sending a simple email with your new mailing address and any other additional details about the move you wish to share.
  11. Establish domicile in the new state

Once you move, you’ll need to establish legal domicile for tax purposes. If you’re moving to another state permanently and making it your main place of residence, you’ll need to establish legal domicile for tax purposes. To find information on the various ways to establish domicile in your new state, check out the state’s website.
  12. Get a new driver’s license

Want to drive in your new state? You’ll need a new driver’s license from your state’s DMV. Be sure to check your state’s requirements, as many states require new residents to obtain their driver’s license within a specific time window after moving. Keep in mind that while requirements for transferring a driver’s license vary from state to state, you’ll most likely need a driver’s license, proof of residency, proof of your social security number and an additional form of identification.
  13. Purchase a pet license

Got a pet? You may need to register your furball with your city or county. While requirements and deadlines vary depending on the state, many places require owners to register their pets within a month of acquiring the pet or moving. This is mainly to ensure that animals receive their necessary Rabies shots for public safety purposes.

How to Choose a Reliable Moving Company

Finding a reputable moving company requires doing some research, but the payoff can be worthwhile.
That’s what Scheyda Mohammadian, a model and public relations professional from Las Vegas learned the hard way. Last fall, after searching on the web for a company to move her belongings from Las Vegas to her new home in Texas, she decided to go with the one that offered her the lowest price—$1,700.
After wiring a 50 percent deposit to the company and paying $450 on moving day, she discovered that her possessions had been moved only to a storage unit a few miles from her Nevada home. Then she had to pay another $450 to the company to release her belongings.
Mohammadian decided to rent a truck and hire workers to get her things to Texas. But the cost came to more than $4,000.
Such experiences aren’t all that unusual. Some moving companies quote lowball prices and then, once the move is underway, hold their customers' property hostage until they pay much more. Others demand substantial deposits and then don't show up, says Katherine Hutt, a spokeswoman for the Better Business Bureau.
To make sure you hire a reliable mover, consider taking these steps.
Hire a local mover. If you hire a moving company based in your area, you'll avoid being tricked into doing business with an unscrupulous mover operating solely over the internet, says Scott Michael, president and CEO of the American Moving & Storage Association, a trade group that represents companies that handle local, interstate, and international moves. Consider visiting the company's office and checking out its equipment, he says.
Get estimates. Get at least three written in-home estimates, Hutt advises. Be suspicious if an estimate is unusually low or if the moving company provides an estimate over the phone or online without sending a representative to scope out the job. It may be a sign of scam.
Verify credentials. For moves between states, a mover must have a number issued by the Department of Transportation. It serves as a license that identifies commercial vehicles transporting passengers or hauling cargo in interstate commerce. If the mover you're considering is licensed, it must provide the DOT number on its website and in its advertising, says Kurt Larson, a spokesman for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, a division of the Department of Transportation that oversees truck and bus safety. The mover also must have a carrier number from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
You can check the DOT and motor carrier numbers, one way to ensure that the company is legitimate.
For in-state moves, the requirements vary by jurisdiction. In some states, intrastate movers are unregulated, Michael says. Thirty-three states require in-state movers to have a federal DOT number. Check your state for more information.
Also consider using a moving company that's certified by the American Moving & Storage Association's ProMover program. It subjects movers to a background check and requires them to adhere to the association's standards.
Read reviews and complaints. See what other customers are saying about the company by searching the web with the company name and such terms as "complaints" and "reviews." Find out whether the company has a report with the Better Business Bureau, which has reviews of more than 20,000 moving-related companies. Look at the letter grade the BBB has assigned the mover and read about any complaints, reviews, and government actions.
You can also review the company's complaint history by using the mover search tool on the Department of Transportation’s website.
Be wary of large deposit requirements. A moving company shouldn't require a deposit of more than 20 percent of the estimated cost of the move, Michael says. Many won't require any payment until your belongings are delivered, he explains. Put any deposits or other payments on a credit card, so you can contest the charge if there's wrongdoing.
If a mover holds your possessions hostage in an effort to force you to pay more, try contacting the police, who may be willing to help, Michael says.
If you have a problem with a mover, file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and, for an interstate move, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration
If the mover is a member of the American Moving & Storage Association, file a complaint with that organization as well.

Also complain to your state or local consumer protection agency. In November, after a company was accused of overcharging customers and holding their possessions hostage, the Maryland attorney general ordered it to pay fines and costs of more than half a million dollars—including at least $117,000 in consumer restitution.

Planning for an Office Relocation? Expert office movers & packers are here to help

Planning to move into a new office? Congratulations! This shows that your company has been prospering and you are marking off this new phase with a relocation.

Well, to begin with, it’s an excellent decision. A new place, a new ambience will bring in that added enthusiasm among the employees, which will hold in good stead for the company. But have you thought about the relocations part yet? You need to assign this important responsibility to trusted and responsible Corporate Relocation Services so that the office moves are hassle-free. After all, this shift marks a new beginning, which plays a pivotal role in your company’s progress.
A meticulous plan for quite a substantial period of time is all you need before you venture to relocate. If the prior planning is good enough, then the transition span will be short, and work can be resumed within a brief hiatus.
But it’s not easy to achieve this. Relocating an office space is a greater task to handle than the domestic one. It’s usually on a much larger scale and handling a wide variety of things and human resources at times can get cumbersome. Well, to keep this situation under control all you have to do is make an office move checklist that will make sure you’re organised enough not to miss even the smallest of objects during relocation:
·         Make a list of all possible things that to be shifted
·         Jot down every small detail possible of those things that are being relocated
·         Consult experts like us, who have 60+ years of experience, when it comes to executive moving and storage

Now that these things are sorted, it’s time to plan for your office relocation and bring the office transition on the right track.

1.       Set a timeframe for relocation:

It’s necessary to determine a timeframe and inform everyone involved with the process so that the tasks can be carried out without any hassles whatsoever. This will ensure that the business is not hampered even when the relocation process is on.

2.       Finalising on a proper office location:

If you want to ensure that the relocation process is worth it, look for a worthy location and office space that will meet all your requirements and be suitable for you in possible respects.

3.       Determine a budget prior to the relocation:

If your relocation plan is full-proof, then determining a budget for the office move will also be quite realistic. This is very important since it will have an impact on the business.

4.       Assign tasks to the employees:

Way before the relocation happens, make sure that you designate tasks to the entire team about each person’s responsibilities. It’s advisable to introduce relocation company executives to each individual department and organised weekly meetings in order to analyse the progress and problems concerned with the office moves.
So, office moves will no longer pose a looming threat if you have with you, the assistance of an expert relocation company like us.

HOW TO PLAN A SUCCESSFUL GARAGE SALE BEFORE MOVING

Packing isn’t usually something most people look forward to. While you can’t avoid it, you can certainly make the process easier on yourself! It all starts with making sure don’t spend time (and money) packing and moving things that you don’t really need to take with you. One of the easiest way to get rid of all your unwanted things is to have a garage sale.

IDEAS ON HOW TO HOST A SUCCESSFUL GARAGE SALE

Garage sales might seem like a lot of work, but they’re pretty easy when you take the time to do some planning beforehand. The key is to start planning early on, so you aren’t scrambling to organize a garage sale right before your move date.

BEST TIME TO HAVE A GARAGE SALE

Garage Sale
When it comes to garage sales, it’s all about timing. (There’s a reason winter garage sales aren’t super common!) Late spring to early fall is the ideal time of year, so aim for this timing if possible. As for the day of the week, you’ll have better luck with foot traffic on days where people aren’t at work, so it’s best to stick to weekends. Both Saturdays and Sundays are good options. If you schedule it on a Saturday, you have the option to extend it to Sunday if things don’t sell as quickly as you expect.
As for the time of day, it’s always best to start early. If you’re having your garage sale during the summer months, it will be much cooler in the mornings. It’s best if you can avoid being outside during the hottest hours of the day, and you’ll get less people stopping by if it’s too hot out. Even if it’s not super hot out, people tend to like earlier sales so they can get some shopping done before moving on with their day.

HOW TO ORGANIZE A GARAGE SALE

Sort your stuff
Once you’ve decided on your date, it’s time to think about what you’re actually going to sell! Treat this as part of your pre-move decluttering process. Grab a box and go through your home one room at a time. As you go through your things, think about how often you use each item. If you haven’t actually used something in months (or years!) then it’s time to toss it. While you’re bound to come across a few things that you’ll just need to toss, there’s a good chance that most of your things can be sold. People will buy just about everything from old electronics and clothing to furniture and trinkets. You can always donate or recycle anything that doesn’t end up selling.
Get the word out
Garage Sale Poster
The next step is to let the world know what you’re up to! Most people make signs to post around the neighborhood. Make sure you include all the important details like where it is, date, hours, and include a short general list of items you’ll have for sale. This helps people decide if your sale is worth a visit. Many people won’t want to take a chance unless they have some idea of what kinds of things you have for sale. This is also a good time to prep your on-site signs. These can be larger to catch the attention of people passing by and make it easier for people to find your sale.
You can also create an online ad to post on community message boards, free online classifieds, and on social media. Social media is especially great for spreading the word—you’ll reach more people when you get your friends to share your posts across their networks too.
Gather your supplies
Think about what you’ll need to properly display all your goods. Gather up any portable tables or lawn chairs to set up your sale. If you have a bunch of clothes to sell, try to borrow a garment rack to hang them on. You’ll also need stickers, tags, or tape in order to attach the prices to all your items.
You should also make sure you have some cash on hand in order to make change. It’s a good idea to get a mix of smaller bills and coins ready to go. Pay a visit to the bank before sale day to get this part sorted.
Sort and price your items
Price Sticker
Sort your items into categories first. It’s easiest to group like items together, like clothes, books, kitchen goods, decorations, etc. Once you’ve grouped them, you can start pricing your items. Try not to overprice things in the hope that people will end up paying more. People like to negotiate, but you also need to be realistic about how much people would actually pay.
Get organized
ceramic bowls

Try to get everything sorted ahead of time. This means putting all the grouped items together in boxes so they’re ready to go, hanging up any clothes, and having all your signs and supplies ready. On the day of the sale, all you should need to do is lay everything out and get it set up.
Sell, sell, sell
Customers at yard sales are always going to want to bargain with you. Just expect it to happen. Remember, the goal is to make it easier for you to get rid of the things you don’t want to move, so don’t get hung up on price. Consider how much of a hassle it would be if you have to get rid of it yourself—it might be worth it to accept a lower offer just to get it off your hands.
Make a plan for things that don’t sell
Man Buying Clothes
Realistically, you’ll probably end up with a few things that don’t sell. You can always gather up everything and drop it off at a local charity shop. This is also a good time to deal with all the other things you couldn’t sell to begin with. If you've got a large amount of stuff to get rid of, it might be worth looking into hiring a junk removal company to clear everything out.

Does Traditional Homeowners Insurance Cover Airbnb Rentals?

When I was a kid, nothing was more fun than a road trip and an overnight stay in a hotel. But things have changed — big time. Today's travelers are skipping hotels and opting for more personal stays in Airbnbs. The home sharing service reports that more than 200 million people have used its service since 2008 — 80 million of those in 2016 alone.
And it's not just those doing the traveling that favor home sharing to hotels. Millennials in particular — 85 percent in fact — support the idea of renting out extra space to people visiting their cities.
But how do you protect yourself if you rent a second home — or even part of your primary home — for extra income? Does a standard homeowners insurance policy cut it?

What Is Home Sharing?

In a nutshell, home sharing is how you — the "host" — can rent your property via a website or app like Airbnbor HomeAway. Potential guests simply log on, find your home, and reserve and pay just like at a hotel. The main difference is your place isn't licensed or regulated like a hotel or bed and breakfast.
That's a problem, though, because it puts you at risk. If a renter damages or vandalizes your property, you could wind up paying to have it fixed, or even for problems they might cause to common areas — like at the pool of your condo building. And if your guests are injured, you could even be responsible for their medical bills.

Protecting Yourself

Your first step should be to talk to your insurance agent and tell them you're home-sharing. They may suggest you purchase a landlord policy that covers the structure, any property inside (including your appliances and furnishings), lost rental income in case of damage, legal fees and liability claims. (Airbnb offers its own Host Protection Insurance program.)
That's because your standard homeowners insurance policy likely doesn't cover short-term rentals. And, even if it does, your insurance company still could deny a claim. Once someone pays you to stay in your home, it technically becomes a business. And homeowners and renters insurance policies typically aren't intended to cover "commercial" use.
Costs for this type of insurance will vary based on your property's size, its location and features, as well what type of coverage you want. While you could rent only to people who will agree to use their own insurance policies, that would probably cut down your pool of renters significantly. And isn't the whole point of becoming a "host" to make money?

Pros and Cons of Moving from California to Texas

Nowadays you will not surprise anyone if you tell that you are going to leave California and move to Texas.  Beautiful coastline and eye-catching hills no longer attract people so much that they could withstand all those difficulties they face on a daily basis. According to the report of the California Legislative Analyst’s office about a million people left the state between 2007 and 2016. It was estimated that by the end of 2018 the number of people who leave this area annually will reach 26,000 individuals. Moreover, the biggest number of people who are thinking of moving or have already decided to do that are qualified middle-aged white-collar workers with the average income in California between $100,000 and $200,000. Consequently, soon many companies will lack educated specialists who look for better life in other states including Texas. You may wonder ‘why Californians are moving to Texas?’, however, there are several reasons for that:
  • California state income tax is the highest in the country.
  • Housing and rental prices are extremely high and 1/3 of renters living in California cannot afford that.
  • Endless traffic rule violations and brutal behavior of drivers on the road.
  • Inability to run business in the state.
  • Unstable political climate with the swing to the left.
  • The ratio between the salary and the cost of living is unrealistic.
As a result, it was estimated that by 2050 20 million people who used to live in California would gradually move to Texas because of these and many other reasons.

Benefits

Texas takes the first place among US states that were chosen by the Californians as a better place of living. In 2016, over 70,000 residents of California found their new home in Texas. Moreover, this state has gained a title of the fastest-growing state in the nation thanks to the hundreds of thousands of Californians in particular.  Of course, it happens not only because of the challenges people have to face in such states as California but also advantages they get when they become locals in Texas. Consequently, there are many benefits of moving from California to Texas.

1. Both personal and corporate income taxes are absent in Texas

Sacramento Tax March
This is one of the greatest benefits for people who would leave a huge part of their income in their own pockets instead of giving it to the state. People who have the business and moving from California to Texas trying to develop it in the new state, have more chances to be successful there.

2. A lower cost of living

There is a significant difference between the cost of living in California and Texas. Housing costs in Texas are 54% less than in California, while a family with kids may save over 60%. However, it is important to compare all the other typical expenses for both states to see how cheaper it is to live in Texas. There is an 18% difference in food cost, 8% less expensive health insurance, and 14% lower spending on entertainment.

3. Faster growing economy

Thanks to the capital city of Texas, Austin that takes the tenth place on the Forbes list of the top 10 growing economies, today the state is also regarded to take the leading positions in the economic sphere as numerous reputable companies like Google and Apple have moved to it. Today the Texas economy is the second largest in the USA and if it was a sovereign country, it could take the tenth place in the whole world.

4. Warm and mild climate

Despite the fact that there are regions in Texas that encompass different climates, the biggest part of the state has a subtropical climate with the average summer temperature of 80-100° F and mild not snowy winters. The climate is very similar to Californian one and is very pleasant for living.

5. Much space for everyone
